MOUNTAIN HOMEPLACE, a living history park, is located outside of Paintsville. Interpreters provide oral history on the impact of the Civil War in the area, and an award-winning video featuring Richard Thomas is shown at the visitor's center. A segment of the video focuses on Johnson County's precarious position during the war, for both sides had many sympathizers. Opinion was so divided that neither flag was allowed to fly above the county courthouse.
Each year, the Civil War "erupts" once more on the fields of the HomePlace. Re-enactors, in authentic uniforms and fully armed, stage mock battles. Call the HomePlace for schedules of this special event.
