Although no records have been found to document exactly when this monument was erected, local lore tells that the project was started by the father of a veteran who may have been buried there. The small obelisk stands on a knoll known as Dutton's Hill, where a minor Civil War skirmish took place. The Battle of Duttons Hill followed the more significant battle in Pulaski County at Mill Springs, where Confederate Brig. Gen. Felix K. Zollicoffer was killed in January 1862.
Soldiers killed at the Battle of Dutton's Hill are buried at this site.
