Another popular spot for non-climbers, Shanty surrounds a state-owned fishing lake. The land is split among multiple owners, but access has never been a problem, in spite of the current trash and debris. The area currently hosts four bolted routes and has potential for numerous topropes. The bouldering scene has barely been tapped and many problems await first ascents. Check out the waterfall for steep overhangs, or the arete and hand crack across the creek. Enjoy the cave if you can find it! The rock is sandstone and gritty.
5/7/02. There have been recent developments with access to this area. KRST is in the process of establishing an access plan with the landowners. For the time being, do not climb past the free-standing boulder that hosts the bolted routes. In other words, the waterfall area is OFF limits. Thanks for your cooperation.
Directions: From Bowling Green, go north on Hwy. 185 approximately 10 miles. Take Hwy 1749 on right. Take right fork, after turning look for Shanty Hollow Road after about 2 miles. Park at lot near boatramp, follow trail to bluffs.
NOTES: Camping is free and allowed, just pack everything out and leave the place a little cleaner than you found it. From the parking lot near the boat ramp, head right onto a four-wheeler track. Cliffs are about 1/2 mile back. Keep noise levels down.
