Rock Climbing

#2 Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park CLOSED - CLIMBING NOT ALLOWED IN STATE PARK -

Climbing is listed here for historical purposes. This area is the home of a classic John Gill boulder problems put up decades ago. The climbing is divided into two areas: Indian Bluffs and John Gill's Bluffs. Pay camping is available near the developed cliffs. Best climbing in spring and autumn.

Indian Bluffs: Ten established routes on sandstone ranging from the 5.3 Itty Bitty (also the route to the top for topropes) to the politically incorrect For Midgets Only (5.10). Short and mostly overhanging, the routes are well-developed.

John Gill's Bluffs: The main attraction is the B2 (5.12) overhang located to the right of the picnic tables and featuring a large bucket about 10 feet up. This 20' high problem is a lesson in frustration. Additional problems can be found at the left end of the cave.

Directions: From Dawson Springs, go south on Hwy 109 to signs for the park. Park at the swimming area.

Close cities/towns: Dawson Springs (15 miles north)
