Trail of Tears in Kentucky

When the Cherokees reached the Ohio River, it was found to be unsafe due to ice in the River and they were marched back to Mantle Rock where shelter was found under the 40 foot high mantle. They were forced to camp here for several weeks through the worst part of the winter. Some 250 -300 people died from exposure and malnutrition and were buried here .

Our thanks to Shawna Ellis for the photo above showing another view of Mantle Rock.

The last detachment arrived in Oklahoma on March 25, 1839. 4300 Cherokee, approximately one-fourth of the Cherokee Nation, had died.
