Located in extreme eastern Kentucky, Martin County rests on the banks of the Tug River, which borders West Virginia. Beautiful, wild and nearly inaccessible in it's youth, the area became a new county September 1, 1870, formed out of the four surrounding counties of Lawrence, Floyd, Johnson and Pike.

Chief Resources: Coal, oil, natural gas and hardwood timber.
