The third and present Washington County courthouse was completed in 1816. The need for the new courthouse was great due to a fire destroying the previous one in 1814. This is the state's oldest courthouse still in use. The marriage certificate of President Abraham Lincoln's parents, Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks, is housed in the courthouse.

Thomas H. Letcher was awarded the contract for construction on 1814 at a cost of $4,195. The building is a two-story structure with the cupola being added in 1840. A single story Doric portico was added in 1918 under the supervision of architect Frank Brewer.
