The fifth and present Jefferson County courthouse was completed in 1860. Gideon Shryock designed the structure and is a great example of Greek Revival architecture in the country today. The laying of the cornerstone took place in October of 1836. There was a dome on the top of the building reminiscent of the United States Capitol. In December of 1905 a fire destroyed the roof and damaged the interior of the building. Brinton B. Davis, a local architect, supervised the repairs to the building.
