The second and present Boyle County courthouse was built by, architect James R. Carrigan in 1860-62.

It is of Italianate style with a majestic two- story clock tower rising above the building.

The courthouse was built on the site of a previous courthouse that was destroyed by fire in 1860.

Serving as the contractor Carrigan also supervised the buildings construction and it was completed costing around $15,000. Only one session was held in the courthouse before it was taken over by the United States Army following the Battle of Perryville in October of 1862.

In 1873 continuing into 1875 renovation and repair work was needed after the troops caused damage to the structure and these repairs were also supervised by Carrigan.
