The park on the left includes an old caboose, the original train depot (now resided and used for offices). The railroad track still remains but is covered in gravel in case one day the line is reactivated to serve as a tourist ride to the community of Bramwell, another mining town just a few miles away in West Virginia. In the meantime, a walking track has been developed along with a small playground and restroom facilities. The railroad was once a major mode of transportation for both passengers and coal.

One may also start at the Coal Heritage Trail Interpretive Center in Bramwell, WV to Pocahontas, VA, "Virginia's Gateway to the Virginia Coal Heritage Trail at the Pocahontas Exhibition Mine or take this route as a side trip as noted below.
Side Trip: From Pocahontas, one can travel 2.5 miles east on Hwy 52, crossing into WV and ending up in the town of Bramwell. Once a thriving coal company which became known as the Town of the Millionaires. Be sure to stop at the Bramwell Depot which has been converted into a small museum and visitor center for WV's Coal Heritage Trail.

On the way back to rejoin the Virginia Coal Heritage Trail, note the Anne Spencer pedestrian bridge to the left. Anne Spencer was a famous black poet in the early 1900s. Further down the road, a large bridge crosses the road. Turn left and see where three bridges cross over each other including two railroad crossings and a pedestrian cross walk.

1.7 Mile Loop. History: "Jewel Ridge Coal Camp is situated at an elevation of 3,500 ft. The camp was built for employees of the Corporation which was formed in 1912. In the late 1920s the company employed 650 men and shipped 3,000 tons of coal daily. Today, many of the residents are descendants of the original employees." Recommend a sign to take people on Jewell Ridge Loop through this historic coal camp community in which the homes are still laid out in rows and very well maintained. Two schools and other remanents of when this was one of the largest thriving coal towns.

Go .6 miles to the Clinchfield Overlook on one's left to see the former Clinchfield Railroad, now a part of CSX and the site of the old Domus Mine. The loading bins is visible beside the railroad and, when trees are void of leaves, remnants of the coal chute further down the mountain.
Recommendation: Need interpretive sign with historic photos of Domus Mine or examples of how it might have appeared.

Coming into downtown Haysi, go straight on Route 63 through the center of town where there are restaurants, a pharmcy and a few shops. Across from Town Hall is a covered pavilion overlooking the river. To one's left is a mural of downtown Haysi during a past flood. To one's right is a monument honoring veterans and a historic marker on settler/indian conflict.

Continuing straight through town, the route changes to Route 612 for 1.2 miles. To the right, look for the entrance to the old Splashdam Mine. An explosion in this mine is 1932 killed 10 men. The Splashdam Coal Seam can be seen at road level above and below the mine entry. A sizeable town once existed just beyond the railroad bridge but now no trace of Splashdam remains. Coal loading docks for trucks and strip mines could once be seen on both sides of the river but these remnants of times past have also disappeared. (Need interpretive sign at this site.)

Sign entering Cllinchco on right. Clinchco was constructed by the Clinchfield Coal Orporation and iat its peak operation conained some 285 houses and a population of about 3,500 and employed over 1,500 men. There needs to be a pull off and interpretive information on this.
WORTHWHILE STOP: just in front of the Clinchco Post Office is the Dickenson Co. Coal Miners Memorial which lists the names of 309 who lost their ives in mine related accidents.
Crossing the street and behind the second house one can see a bake oven where the Hungarians and Italians made bread. Two small beehive ovens are buried nearby. Need interpretive sign at a location where one can view the ovens but not access private property.
From the Miners Memorial, continue out Main Street (Route 644) for .1 mile to the Dennis Reedy Railroad and Coal Mine Museum on the left. The only coal company business building still remining in Clinchco is across the street from the msueum and at one time or another housed a bank, barber shop, copmany offices, printed area, school room, mortuary and a post office.
Turn off onto New Camp Road where there is an excellent example of coal camp row houses. Billboard also on the right.
Continue straight on 83.

Town of McClure - little league field and water company. Town resembles coal camp but actually was a lumber camp built by the W.M. Ritter Lumber Company. Note: about a mile up Caney Creek from McClure is located the McClure 1 Mine. An explosion in this mine in 1983 took the lives of seven and included the first woman miner killed in the state of Virginia. This mine is not visible from a public highway. Is there an interpretative sign describing this incident or a memorial.

If one turns right onto 4th Avenue to US 58 Alt (Trail of the Lonesome Pine), one starts a byway loop which travels along US 58A to Hwy 65 then 23 then back to 58A passing through or by the communities of Dunagannon, Clinchport, Duffield, BIg Stone , Norton, Tacoma, Coeburn before ending back at St. Paul. One has the choice of going either right or left on US 58 Alt. but will also end up back in St. Paul.
